should是助動詞shall的過去式,只用于第一人 稱:①用于陳述語氣:構成第一人稱過去將來時、過去將來完成時以及過去將來進行時。②用于主句中構成虛擬語氣:“should+動詞不定式的原形”表示虛擬結果時指現在,表示推測結果時指將來; “should+動詞不定式的完成式”也表示虛擬結果或推測結果,但使用范圍較窄,一般表示一件事情根據條件本可能實現,但由于沒有根據條件或條件不存在,因而沒有實現,即表示與過去事實相反。在并不強調由于某種條件而產生某種結果時往往不帶條件狀語或條件狀語分句。③構成第一人稱委婉、謙遜的語氣。④I should like用來表示愿望或意向,有時也可表示猶豫。后接動詞不定式的一般式時表示現在或將來可能實現也可能不實現的愿望; 后接動詞不定式的完成式時表示對過去一件未做的事情感到惋惜; like用完成式,后接動詞不定式的一般式時表示過去有做一件事的愿望,但由于某種原因,這件事未做成,在該結構中like也可以名詞作賓語。

should用作情態動詞shall的過去式:①用于陳述語氣:shall用于第二、第三人稱時表示命令、許諾、威脅、警告、禁止等,當它指的是過去事件時就要用should。在表示意向、要求、決定、建議等意義的從句里,如果主句的謂語動詞是過去式,則從句中的should既可看作情態動詞shall的陳述語氣過去式,也可看作它的虛擬語氣,但當句子的語氣不夠委婉時宜看作前者。②用于虛擬條件從句中,可用于各種人稱,有以下兩種含意:一是表示對將來事件的推測,相當于漢語中的“萬一”,這時主句往往不用虛擬語氣,而用陳述語氣或祈使語氣; 二是表示虛擬讓步。③在表示命令、要求、建議等意義的詞所支配的分句里,通常也用should來構成虛擬語氣,這時無論主句用現在式或過去式,從句都可用should,這樣的結構主要有以下兩種:一是表示命令、要求、建議等意義的動詞(如advice, demand, intend等等)或名詞(如recommendation, suggestion等等)+that-clause; 二是It is necessary〔desirable, essential, important等〕+that-clause。④表示驚愕、遺憾、欣慰、悔恨、失望、突然、出乎意料等感情。⑤表示有很大可能性,是預期中的,幾乎是必然的。
