admire的基本意思是表示主語(人)對某人、物或事物的尊重或喜愛的感情,即“贊美、贊賞、稱贊”; 也可表示承認其優越性和超人之處,即“欽佩”。口語中有時含有“奉承”的味道,也可用作反語,表示一種譏諷的口氣,在古語中還可表示“驚奇,難以想象”。

admire語氣較強,多用于一般時態,可用作及物動詞,也可用作不及物動詞。用作及物動詞時后接名詞、代詞或動名詞作賓語,有時還可接以as短語充當補足語的復合賓語。在表示“欽佩某人的…”時常用admire for v -ing結構。

在美式英語或英國一些方言中admire可以接動詞不定式作賓語,但不表示“欽佩”“贊賞”,而表示“高興做某事”,相當于like, wish。

admire還可用作不及物動詞,這時通常接at短語,可表示“對…感到欽佩”。

- [誤] How I admire you!I wish I could make my hair curl like that.
- [正] How I envy you! I wish I could make my hair curl like that.
- 本句所羨慕的只是那一頭卷發,并不見得欽佩那個有一頭卷發的人,而且明確表示“希望能有”,故用envy。

- 這兩個詞都是“稱贊”“夸獎”的意思,且都可用于admire sb for sth 句型。其差別在于:praise是普通用語,而admire帶有感嘆意味。另外, praise可用于上級對下級的稱贊,而admire則多用于平等者。

- 這些動詞均含“尊重、欽佩”之意。
- admire側重指對某人或某物的仰慕、欽佩,并含欣賞愛慕之情。
- honour側重指對某人或某物表示極大的敬意。
